Puzosia is a genus of ammonites (extinct cephalopod mollusks) that lived during the Cretaceous period, between about 125 and 70 million years ago. It is known for its shell shaped like a flat spiral, often characterized by complex suture lines that resemble the pattern of a fern leaf. The shell is typically discoidal and can vary from more evolved forms (whorls with little overlap) to semi-involute. It features sinuous ribs on the surface, periodically interrupted by constrictions (usually about six per turn of the whorl). It has a very intricate ammonitic suture pattern, which served to strengthen the shell without making it too heavy, allowing the animal to move easily in the water column. Like other cephalopods of its time, Puzosia was a marine predatory animal. It used a structure called the siphuncle to move liquid and gas inside the chambered shell, thus regulating buoyancy like a modern submarine. It is believed they lived mainly in shallow seas (up to 200 meters deep) and that they were preyed upon by large marine reptiles such as mosasaurs. Exceptional lot: Puzosia of kg.36, l 49 cm, h 43 cm, p 13 cm. Reserve price absolutely interesting, not less than €1,250.00 Good auction.
