An exceptional George I Bullet Teapot made in London in 1723 by Bowles Nash.

An exceptional George I Bullet Teapot made in London in 1723 by Bowles Nash.

The Bullet shaped teapot replaced the pear shaped form, however this piece represents a very early example of this design, as they are more associated with the George II period. This very fine teapot has a globular shaped main body which stands on a cast and applied foot decorated with reeding. The sides of the main body rise to a circular collar which the hinged, stepped, cover rests on. The cover is also decorated with reeding and terminates in a cast bell finial. The cast straight spout has a moulded lip and an oval of strainer holes are pierced on the interior of the main body, where the spout is attached. The piercing simulating a flower head, such is the high quality of production. The bottom handle socket is of a plain tubular form, however the top one has been finely modelled in an octagonal form, which is a most unusual feature. The fruitwood handle fits into the two sockets. The teapot is of the finest quality, as would be expected from this maker. It is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the underside of the cover. The main body is not engraved with an Armorial or Crest, however shows no signs of erasure. The base is, however, engraved with the contemporary initials S*A. Bowles Nash was apprenticed to Gabriel Sleath, on 25 th March, 1713, which would account for the fine quality of this teapot. His first mark was entered as a largeworker on 7 th March, 1721, with workshops in Round Court, St. Martin’s Le Grand, when this piece was made. A near identical example of 1725, by the same maker Bowles Nash, is in the Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is on display in gallery 510 at the museum, being the gift of Irwin Untermyer in 1968. An image is attached of the teapot. Height, to the top of the handle: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm. Length, handle to spout: 8.45 inches, 21.25 cm. Depth: 4.3 inches, 10.75 cm. Weight: 15oz.
