Anasazi Kayenta Black-on-White Pottery Cup with Twisted Handle

Native American, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Kayenta tradition. A handled cup in Kayenta Black-on-White, made with a squat, rounded body and a tall, slightly flared neck, much like a small pitcher. A twisted strap handle runs from the rim to the shoulder and is painted in alternating dark and light bands, so it looks like a rope. The pale slipped neck has pairs of short vertical dashes, and two thin lines mark off the shoulder. Below that the decoration switches to the Kayenta habit of covering the surface densely with dark paint. Zigzag bands of small white squares are left unpainted in this dark field, forming a woven lattice of negative design. A single dotted circle sits in one of the gaps between the zigzags. Vessels like this were probably used every day to dip and pour water or food. It is a lively example of the strong contrasts favored by Ancestral Puebloan potters. Kayenta painted pottery is known for its "negative" style. Potters covered most of the vessel surface with dark paint so that the pale slip showed through only as the pattern. This reversed the open, linear look of earlier black-on-white wares. The fine checkerboard and lattice bands on this cup are a classic example of the approach. The pattern is often compared to woven textiles and basketry, which were made in the same communities. Twisted or braided handles took extra skill to make and appear on mugs, pitchers, and dippers across the northern Southwest. They added both decoration and a better grip. Item # 205674
