Anatole Le Pelletier - Le Dieu Inconnu - 1867

LE PELLETIER (Anatole). The Unknown God. Prologue: Philosophical Uncertainty of the Truth. Theorem I: Jehovah, and subsidiarily: Theodicy of Good and Evil. Theorem II: The Holy Spirit, the triple Theophany, the triple Life, and the second Death. Theorem III: The Christ in his relations with astronomy, chronology, and mythology. Corollary: Philosophy of the perpetual Holocaust. Paris, Le Pelletier, printer, 40 rue d’Aboukir, 1867. In-8, xii, 216 p., [1] f. (table), half Moroccan leather, back with raised bands ornamented with gilded rosettes, title in gold, boards of marbled paper (bindings of the period). Original edition. Anatole Le Pelletier was a Parisian printer and a self-taught thinker, active from 1844 to 1873. On the fringes of the Church, he built a body of prophetic metaphysics and cyclic speculation: Deism and Universal System (1844), The Universal Cycle (1852), Biblical Astronomy (1867), The Key of Times (1871-1872). He is best known as the editor of Nostradamus’s Oracles (1867). The text “ne varietur” of this edition served as the basis for generations of commentators on Nostradamus. The Unknown God, published the same year, presents the theological side of the work. The work is built more geometrico, in a prodrome, three theorems and a corollary. It addresses the uncertainty of dogma, the theodicy of good and evil, the triple theophany, the “triple life” of the soul, and the “second death” of the Apocalypse. It then reads Christ through the prism of astronomy, chronology, and the “mythology of all peoples,” in the tradition of the solar myth and religious comparison. It ends with a “philosophy of the perpetual holocaust.” Printed for the author’s address and little circulated, this esoteric treatise targets the Paris intellectual milieu of the Second Empire, where prophecy, Nostradamian astrology, and astral symbolism nourished the occult renewal illustrated by Éliphas Lévi (1810-1875). Binding slightly rubbed, some worm-eaten spots and other minor flaws."
