Very fine example of a gray ceramic statue from the Han Dynasty of ancient China. A Han Dynasty warrior figurine in gray pottery with a large portion of pigments painted. This painting clearly depicts the face, bearing a fixed expression. This figurine of a soldier from the Han cohort wears a red tunic and a chest plate over it, his trousers are shortened and puffed. The right hand is clenched and has a central hole, which formerly held a weapon, such as a spear or a sword. This statuette was used as funerary object or “mingqi” for a wealthy and influential Han person. It is believed that such goods were needed for the deceased in the afterlife. Elaborate groups of funerary items were also a display of wealth and social status. China, Han Dynasty, 206 BCE to 220 CE. Very good condition, red, white and black pigmentation.
