Ancient Greek, Hellenistic Unguentarium with Light-Coloured Slip - 10 cm

Ancient Greek, Hellenistic Unguentarium with Light-Coloured Slip - 10 cm

A fine Hellenistic terracotta unguentarium of characteristic fusiform or spindle-shaped form, dating to approximately the 3rd–1st century BC. The vessel has an elongated, slightly bulbous body tapering gradually into a remarkably long and slender cylindrical neck with a small opening. The lower body narrows towards a small flattened base, creating the elegant spindle-shaped profile characteristic of Hellenistic unguentaria. The vessel is wheel-thrown from reddish-orange clay and retains substantial areas of its original light beige to cream-coloured surface slip. Areas of wear and loss to the slip reveal the warmer reddish ceramic fabric beneath, creating an attractive contrast across the ancient surface. Darkened areas, earthy deposits and mineral encrustations are visible in places and contribute to the vessel’s naturally aged archaeological appearance. Typology and Dating This vessel belongs to the well-known group of fusiform unguentaria widely produced and used throughout the Hellenistic Mediterranean world. Characteristic features include the elongated spindle-shaped body, narrow tubular neck, small opening and reduced base. Comparable examples are preserved in major museum collections. The British Museum holds related fusiform unguentaria from Kourion dated approximately 300–50 BC, while the Princeton University Art Museum preserves a closely comparable Hellenistic example measuring 10.3 cm in height. The type is also documented in Ptolemaic Egypt, including examples from Naukratis dating to the 3rd–2nd century BC. As this vessel type circulated widely throughout the Hellenistic world, a precise production centre cannot be established without archaeological context. The broader attribution Eastern Mediterranean is therefore appropriate. Function Unguentaria were small vessels used for storing and dispensing valuable substances, particularly perfumed oils, ointments, cosmetics and other liquids. Their narrow necks and small openings allowed the contents to be dispensed carefully and economically. Such vessels are known from both domestic contexts and burials and were particularly common as grave goods during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Condition Good condition considering its age. The vessel is preserved with body, neck, rim and base. The ancient surface displays age-related wear, minor chips and irregularities, together with earthy and mineral deposits. A substantial proportion of the original light beige to cream-coloured slip remains visible. Areas of wear and loss expose the reddish-orange terracotta underneath. Some darker discolouration and deposits are visible, particularly towards the lower body. No obvious modern additions or restorations are identifiable from the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the collectors’ extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. The collection is documented in Germany by 1970 through historical photographs of the family residence and subsequently remained in continuous family ownership. The objects were acquired privately during the collectors’ travels. As was customary for private purchases made at local markets during the 1950s and 1960s, purchase receipts or invoices were generally neither issued nor requested. Historical photographs and biographical documentation relating to the Dammann Collection are available and support the long-standing provenance of the collection.
