Ancient Roman

Ancient Roman Carnelian Intaglio Depicting a Sacred Ibis beneath a Crescent Moon Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–3rd century AD Material: Carnelian Weight: 1.3 g Dimensions: 16.0 × 12.9 × 3.5 mm From a Private European Collection. A remarkably beautiful and rare Ancient Roman carnelian intaglio featuring an exquisitely engraved sacred ibis standing among stylised water plants beneath a prominent crescent moon. The gemstone displays a magnificent warm orange-brown translucency, beautifully complementing its intricate engraved composition. At the centre stands an elegant ibis, instantly recognisable by its long, gracefully curved neck, slender downward-pointing beak and delicate legs. Carefully arranged vegetation frames the bird, creating a harmonious scene reminiscent of the fertile banks of the Nile. Above the ibis appears a distinctly engraved crescent moon, introducing a fascinating celestial element and lending the entire composition a particularly evocative character. The Sacred Ibis – A Symbol of Divine Wisdom: In ancient Egyptian religion, the ibis was one of the most revered sacred animals, closely associated with Thoth, the powerful god of wisdom, writing, knowledge, sacred learning and divine order. Thoth occupied an essential position within the Egyptian pantheon. As the divine scribe and guardian of knowledge, he was associated with the recording of sacred events, the regulation of time and the preservation of cosmic harmony. The ibis became one of his most recognisable manifestations, transforming this elegant bird into an enduring symbol of intellectual and spiritual authority. Egyptian Religious Symbolism in the Roman Empire: Following the incorporation of Egypt into the Roman Empire in 30 BC, Egyptian religious traditions and artistic imagery spread throughout the Mediterranean world. Egyptian deities, sacred animals and celestial symbols appeared on personal ornaments, engraved gemstones and amulets, reflecting the fascination that Egyptian spirituality exercised upon Roman society. The combination of the sacred ibis, crescent moon and waterside vegetation gives this intaglio a particularly compelling religious and cultural character. The celestial motif is especially attractive within this context, recalling the importance of lunar cycles, sacred time and cosmic order in Egyptian religious thought. An Exceptional Miniature Work of Ancient Art: Despite measuring only 16.0 mm in length, the gemstone presents a remarkably expressive and carefully balanced composition. The bird's characteristic silhouette, the engraved feather details, the delicate vegetation and the clearly defined crescent moon demonstrate the visual sophistication of ancient gem engraving. Particularly appealing is the beautiful contrast between the polished, translucent carnelian and the deeply engraved design, which remains clearly legible. The oval form and smooth reverse are characteristic of gemstones intended for mounting in personal jewellery, particularly signet rings. A captivating ancient gemstone combining refined craftsmanship, remarkable preservation and the enduring religious symbolism of the Greco-Roman world. A highly attractive collector's piece for enthusiasts of Roman intaglios, ancient engraved gemstones, Egyptian religious imagery and classical antiquities.
