Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 969 The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the bronze eagle statuette from B.N. in Schiedam, The Netherlands. The previous owner, B.N. of Schiedam, did not provide a date for when the object entered his collection. According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in The Netherlands. The date on which it entered that collection is unknown. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This small Roman bronze depicts an eagle positioned above a stylised bull’s head. Comparable Roman bronze objects combining an eagle and bull’s head are known from the Imperial period and have been interpreted as religious or symbolic fittings, statuettes or finials. The small perforation visible near the eagle’s head indicates that the object may originally have formed part of a larger fitting or assemblage, although its precise original function cannot be established with certainty. The eagle was one of the most important symbols in Roman iconography. As the bird of Jupiter, supreme god of the Roman pantheon, it represented divine authority and power. The eagle also had a particularly important military significance: the aquila was the sacred standard of a Roman legion and was treated with exceptional reverence by Roman soldiers. However, the presence of an eagle on a Roman bronze object does not by itself demonstrate a direct connection with a particular legion or the Roman army. The combination of eagle and bull is especially interesting. Closely comparable Roman bronzes showing an eagle standing on a bull’s head are known, including an example in the Dumbarton Oaks collection dated to the 2nd–3rd century A.D. Objects with this combination have also been associated with the religious sphere of Jupiter and, in some cases, with the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus. This deity became particularly popular throughout the Roman Empire during the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. and had a notable following among soldiers. The bull and eagle both occur within the wider iconography connected with this cult. Nevertheless, without a documented archaeological context, an attribution of this particular object specifically to Jupiter Dolichenus should remain cautious. Small cast bronzes of this type were produced using established Roman metalworking techniques and could serve as statuettes, votive objects or decorative and functional fittings. Such objects circulated widely throughout the Empire alongside the religious imagery and cult practices they represented. The eagle-and-bull composition therefore has a clear place within Roman religious symbolism, while a specifically military function cannot be demonstrated from the object alone. As a compact piece of Roman bronze work, it provides a tangible connection to the religious imagery and symbolic language familiar to people throughout the Roman Empire."} }%
