Alla auktioner / Förhistorisk Konst / Ancient Roman Bronze - Impressive military votive amulet in Gladius/Pugio type
Gladius/Pugio is a Roman sword; not only was it used by legionaries but also by gladiators, regardless of their background. It served as an amulet, offering protection against injuries they might face in the Colosseum arena. It is said to have developed at the end of the 3rd century BC—from a type of sword of the Iberian Celts—and it was the standard weapon of the Roman army infantry. Such amulets were used by Roman soldiers as a symbol of their strength and bravery.
