Background Information: This bronze coin is attributed to Diocletian, Roman emperor from A.D. 284 to 305. The obverse legend IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS AVG identifies the ruler as Imperator Caesar Gaius Valerius Diocletianus Augustus. His reign marked an important period of political and administrative reorganisation following the instability of the 3rd century. The reverse bears the legend CONCORDIA MILITVM, meaning “harmony of the soldiers”. This formula emphasised unity between the emperor and the Roman military, whose loyalty was essential to imperial authority. The theme was particularly appropriate during the Tetrarchic period, when Diocletian reorganised imperial government around a college of rulers intended to provide greater political and military stability. Coins carrying such messages were produced through the organised Roman imperial minting system and circulated widely throughout the provinces. In addition to their everyday monetary function, they communicated imperial portraits, titles and political ideals to soldiers, merchants and civilians across the Roman world. Dating to the late 3rd or early 4th century A.D., this coin belongs to a decisive period in the development of the Late Roman Empire. It forms a tangible connection to the monetary system, military culture and imperial politics experienced by people in everyday Roman life."
