According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands; the date of this earlier ownership is unknown. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: Bronze tweezers were practical personal implements widely used throughout the Roman world. Examples are known from both civilian and military contexts and were primarily associated with personal grooming, particularly the removal of unwanted facial and body hair. They could also serve for other delicate tasks requiring a small gripping instrument. This example consists of two long, narrow arms joined at the upper end and accompanied by a movable suspension ring. The upper sections are ornamented with groups of transverse incised lines, demonstrating that even relatively simple utilitarian objects could receive decorative finishing. The ring allowed the tweezers to be suspended or carried together with other small personal implements. Personal grooming occupied an established place in Roman daily life. Archaeological finds include tweezers alongside razors, nail cleaners, ear scoops, probes and other toiletry instruments. Such objects could be kept individually or combined into portable sets suspended from a ring, making them convenient possessions for travellers, soldiers and civilians alike. Roman bronze workers produced these implements in large numbers using established metalworking techniques. Their occurrence at settlements, towns, villas, military sites and frontier communities demonstrates their broad distribution throughout the Empire. Small bronze toilet implements travelled with their owners and circulated through the extensive commercial and military networks connecting the Roman provinces. Unlike monumental objects associated with public Roman life, personal implements such as these offer insight into the ordinary routines of individuals. This piece provides a direct and physical link to Roman daily life, preserving an object once designed to be carried and repeatedly handled as part of personal grooming and care.
