Ancient Thai Ban Chiang Baluster Jar | Serpentine Incised Band, Impressed

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, Early Period. An earthenware urn of tall baluster form. It rises from a low foot through a swelling lower body to a flared neck. Two loop handles sit near the rim and a third projects from the lower body, an off-balance arrangement that may have helped with carrying or tipping. Deeply incised outlines trace a band of ribbon-like, serpentine motifs, and finely impressed texture. Incised rings divide the neck into registers of hatched ornament, and the rim lip carries its own band of slanted strokes. Vessels like this are known from early Ban Chiang burial contexts and were likely placed with the dead. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205644
