Van der Vossen belongs to the artists who, shortly after World War II, broke with figurations out of conviction and chose abstraction. From a diary kept since 1947 it appears that after 1945 he followed developments in modern art closely. He was particularly impressed by the exhibitions in 1947 and 1948 about Kandinsky and Klee organized by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His abstract oeuvre (made between 1947-1957) ranges from strict geometric to abstract-expressionist. Although Van der Vossen was very modest about his work, he was involved in several important artistic events and movements in the fifties. In 1957 he returned to figuration, with sea and dune views as his preference.
