Antique oak pipe and tobacco cabinet – Smoker’s Cabinet – circa 1900–1930 A particularly atmospheric antique smoker’s cabinet, crafted from beautifully figured wood and specially arranged for the pipe smoker. This compact side-table model combines a pipe rack, open storage space, and a practical drawer in one elegant piece of furniture. In the upper left corner is the most characteristic detail: a wooden rack with three circular cutouts for placing tobacco pipes. Such integrated pipe racks are typical of the so-called smoker’s cabinets that were popular around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Similar English examples from the Edwardian period were equipped with pipe racks, drawers, and space for a tobacco pot or tobacco jar. The large open compartment offered space for a tobacco pot, pipes, or other smoking accessories. The wide drawer underneath could be used for smaller items such as matches, pipe cleaners, a pipe tamper, a tobacco knife, or other personal smoking supplies. In documented smoker’s cabinets from this period we see exactly this combination of pipe holder, open storage, and drawers. The construction is sober but particularly attractive. The rounded outside corners, warm dark brown patina, and visible wood grain give the cabinet the characteristic appearance of early-20th-century smoking and gentlemen’s accessories. The drawer is fitted with a simple round wooden knob, in keeping with the understated design. Based on the styling and comparison with documented pipe and smoker cabinets, we place this piece cautiously in the early decades of the 20th century, circa 1900–1930. An exact maker or origin has not been established, and therefore no unverified attribution is provided by design. Specifications * Object: antique pipe and tobacco cabinet / smoker’s cabinet * Type: table-model smoking accessory cabinet * Period: presumably circa 1900–1930 * Material: wood, presumably oak * Color: warm mid- to dark brown * Built-in pipe rack for 3 pipes * Large open compartment for tobacco pot and smoking accessories * Bottom drawer with wooden knob * Traditional furniture construction * Fine natural wood grain and old patina * Maker: unknown / not visibly marked * Pipes, tobacco pot and other accessories not included Condition The cabinet is in an authentic antique state with clear signs of age and use. There are scratches, wear, discoloration, and local loss of the old finish on the wood. In particular the top, the front edges, and the shelf inside show signs of years of use. This well-worn finish gives the cabinet a lot of character and fits perfectly with its original function as a regularly used smoking accessory. User marks visible in the photos.
