Antieke Nederlandse tabakspot – gedraaid hout en lood –...

Dutch tobacco pot – turned wood, brass and lead – complete with original tobacco press – circa 1770–1790 Description Very beautiful and remarkably well-preserved Dutch tobacco pot from the latter half of the 18th century, probably around 1770–1790. The pot is made of finely turned wood and has a characteristic bulb-shaped, profiled body with a slightly drawn-in neck above. The wood has a particularly warm reddish-brown color and an attractive patina that has developed through age and use. Both at the bottom and around the upper rim the pot is reinforced and finished with brass bands, which contrast nicely with the dark wood. The tobacco pot is closed by the original, richly profiled domed wooden lid, crowned with a finely turned knob. Of particular interest is the completely preserved interior. The pot is fitted with its old lead inner lining and also still features the loose, heavy lead tobacco press or inner disk. This round press was placed directly on the tobacco and helped compress it and keep it at the proper moisture level. The combination of turned wood, brass fittings, lead inner lining, and the loose lead press is characteristic of high-quality Dutch tobacco pots from the 18th century. Dimensions Total height including lid: approx. 16 cm Diameter of opening/top rim: approx. 12 cm Condition For its age, the tobacco pot is in very good and remarkably complete condition. Both the wooden lid, the brass fittings, the lead inner lining, and the loose lead press are present. The wood shows the normal small signs of use and aging that one would expect from a piece over two centuries old. These actually contribute to the authentic look and attractive patina. A particularly decorative and historically interesting object of use from the period when tobacco was a valuable traded commodity. Especially the completeness with the original inner lining and tobacco press makes this an appealing collector’s item.
