Antique Collar Brooch with Diamond & Pearls in Rose Gold, c. 1890

This wonderful brooch brings an autumnal vibe to your lapel. The rose gold design is richly ornamented: it features delicate engravings, three-dimensional forged flowers, slender decorative bars, gold beads, and elegant arches. At the center of the brooch, a sparkling diamond serves as the focal point of the tiered design; small pearls add further shimmering details. The abundance of individual forms is typical of the late 19th century. After jewellery had previously been created in every conceivable style of the past, designers now began to combine influences to create a new, opulent look. No clear reference to the past can be identified here; the brooch is therefore not intended to be Gothic or antique in style: the aim was rather to create a romantic, opulent image that opened the door to associations. The large jewellery manufacturers in Pforzheim, in particular, produced jewellery like this: Ornaments such as the arches used here in the outer register of the design are frequently found, for example, in the repertoire of the Benckiser company. The brooch glows warmly in an intense red-gold hue. This gold alloy is also typical of the late 19th century. The brooch was very likely made in Germany.
