Antique Gold Pendant with Amethysts & Pearls, Great Britain c. 1905

Antique Gold Pendant with Amethysts & Pearls, Great Britain c. 1905

In the early years of the 20th century, delicate pendants were popular in Great Britain: those made of fine gold bars around which delicate leaves wind and which are richly set with small pearls and brightly colored stones. This is a representative of this genre. The pendant in the shape of a plant dynamically twisted around itself presents seven faceted amethysts and three shimmering pearls. The intense purple amethyst gemstones form two leaves and a small bud on a tendril. Like flowers, a shimmering pearl sits in two of the leaves and in the middle between them. Their white color provides a beautiful contrast to the colour of the amethysts. The design combines a playful lightness with geometric rigor. The result is a piece of jewellery that does not appear too overloaded, yet still transports the typical romantic tone of its time of origin into the present day. We discovered the pendant and its chain in the typical British gold alloy of 9 carat (375/000) in London.
