Knots and intertwined ribbons are already known symbols of love since ancient times. Indissolubly, they symbolically bind the lovers together, and thus stand for the eternal duration of the beautiful feeling we know so well. Due to the possibility of redesigning the knots in jewellery production in all times according to the taste and fashion of the time, this motif has always remained topical and has been taken up again and again. The present brooch also shows an excitingly beautiful love knot and it dates from around 1850. A single ribbon is shown here in elaborate intertwining and adorned with a total of twelve magnificent rhodolites. Small cord solderings as well as granules are set between the gemstones, giving the band an almost textile-like appearance. And yet the jewel is made of hand-chased gold. In addition to their touching symbolism, knot shapes are also popular motifs in jewellery design for another reason: they allow the craftsmanship of the goldsmith to be demonstrated. Their curved, often artistically arched metal surfaces offer the most beautiful twists and turns to reflect the striking light in wonderfully different ways. In this way, light and shadow model the forms and give the piece of jewellery a special plasticity. This is exactly the case with this piece of jewellery. On the back there is a small medallion compartment in which a weave of hair has been preserved. A safety chain, probably attached later, prevents the piece from getting lost. This piece of jewellery made of chased gold, probably created in England in the years around 1850, is a brooch that is as romantic as it is beautiful, making it the ideal gift for a person to whom you feel connected by the proverbial bond of love.
