At the Edge of the Dune by Gary Westall Painting 9.5 x 11.8 :: I painted this picture en plein air during the annual plein air event in Poland. I painted it on the same stretch of beach in Ustronie Morskie–Wieniotowo on the Polish Baltic coast as my painting “Where the Wind Touches the Sea ” but this time looking in the opposite direction. I was fascinated by the interplay between the steep dune the wind-sculpted pine trees and the open sea. As I painted the light and clouds constantly changed the mood of the landscape creating ever-changing shades of color. With this painting I wanted not only to capture the beauty of this stretch of coastline but also to convey the feeling of standing among the dunes the forest and the sea and to directly experience the tranquility and power of nature.
