Circa 1880, 19x26 cm. "Kabyle beggar woman and her child", a very beautiful period albumen print, in very good condition, with preserved contrast, gray tonalities and detail levels ranging from Very Good to Superb, attributed to Jean Geiser. The appeal of this print is that it is not mounted on an album page or stiff backing, which is rare. Hand-captioned on the reverse. Rare subject. Deserves framing. Will be shipped with its neutral pH sleeve (ideal for a collection kept in good condition). Jean Geiser (1848-1923) is one of the most important photographers of colonial Algeria at the end of the 19th century. Of Swiss origin, he settled in Algiers around 1873 and founded a photographic studio that quickly became one of the most renowned in North Africa. His work is part of the Orientalist photography tradition. He produced thousands of images intended for travelers, settlers and European collectors: views of cities, landscapes, street scenes, portraits of inhabitants and studio compositions featuring dancers, musicians or people in exotic costume."
