Bronze sculpture of a lying antelope, attributed to Pierre Le Faguays. – Art Deco lying antelope – France, ca. 1925–1935 Very elegant Art Deco sculpture of a lying antelope/gazelle, attributed to the renowned French sculptor Pierre Le Faguays (1892–1962). The sculpture is beautifully stylized, with a striking elongated silhouette. The slim, extended legs, slender neck, and the exceptionally long horns, bent backwards and ringed, give the figure a distinctly dynamic and elegant appearance. The flowing modeling and streamlined form are very characteristic of the French Art Deco period. Pierre Le Faguays was among the important French sculptors of Art Deco and produced both human figures and stylized animals. He also worked under the pseudonym Fayral, and several of his sculptures were executed in collaboration with the renowned Parisian art foundry Le Verrier. For this lying antelope, similar specimens are known that are attributed to Le Faguays/Fayral. Of particular interest is that a documented example of the model has a length of about 36 cm, virtually exactly matching the piece offered here. On the underside there are old fixing remnants. These indicate that the sculpture was originally probably mounted on a separate plinth but was not screwed. The original plinth is no longer present. The sculpture has a beautiful dark patinated finish with localized natural signs of use and age appropriate for an object of this age. See the photos, which are part of the description.
