Australian Opal Ring / new Set in 925 sterling silver Weight: 1.52 g 7.1 mm x 3.9 mm New and unworn Ring size: U 62 UK T 1/2 US 9.9 Fr 22 Inner diameter: 19.7 mm The opal is a mineral belonging to the mineral class of “Oxides and Hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive veining or knobby formation. Opals are processed exclusively as gemstones. The word opal was borrowed from Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and presumably stems from upala in Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, these terms referred to various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya. Opals were already regarded in antiquity as particularly valuable gemstones, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about this: “... there is a fire inherent in it, finer than that of the carbunculus; it possesses the purple spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald, and an utterly incredible play of light.” Shipping as insured registered mail
