Obv: Turbaned prince seated facing, holding an orb; Arabic titulature around: الملك الأشرف شاه أرمن موسى بن أبي بكر. “The Most Noble King, Shah of Armenia, Musa, son of Abu Bakr”; Arabic date inscription in the fields, giving date. Rev: Arabic inscription naming the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir and the Ayyubid ruler al-Kamil Muhammad: الإمام الناصر لدين الله أمير المؤمنين / الملك الكامل محمد. “The Imam al-Nasir li-Din Allah, Commander of the Faithful / The Perfect King, Muhammad”; additional Arabic legend around. Reference: Album, A Checklist of Islamic Coins, 859.2. Al-Ashraf Musa was a nephew of Saladin and a son of al-Adil I. He ruled territories in Upper Mesopotamia before taking Damascus in 1229. His career reflects the shifting alliances and rivalries among the Ayyubid princes, who divided Saladin’s former empire into regional states. He governed Damascus until his death in 1237.
