BAI BAI NAPANGARTI Kukatja language, c.1939 - 2020 Pulkabardu, 1999 acrylic on canvas 119 x 80 cm bears inscription verso: Warlayirti Artists, 1200x800, Bai Bai 669/99, BR0319; labels verso Coo-ee #7549 and Lawson-Menzies #118 PROVENANCE Warlayirti Artists, Western Australia, Cat No. 669/99 Coo-ee Aboriginal Art Gallery, New South Wales, Cat No. 7549 Company Collection, New South Wales, Cat No. BR0319 Lawson~Menzies, Aboriginal Art, Sydney, 25 May 2004, Lot No. 118 Private Collection, New South Wales Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Warlayirti Artists Bai Bai Napangarti (Napangardi) spent her youth and early adulthood traversing her ancestral lands, learning the laws, stories and cultural responsibilities that guide Warlpiri women's ceremonial life. She later settled at Yaga Yaga with her husband, the renowned painter Sunfly Tjampitjin, and together they began painting in the mid-1980s. Following his passing, Napangardi moved to the Balgo Hills community, where she was recognised as a senior law woman and cultural authority. In this work, Napangardi depicts the country of Pulkabardu, located south of Yagga in the Great Sandy Desert. The long central shape is Pulkabardu soakwater, created by the Wati Kutjarra, two mythical ancestors who travelled through this area in the Tjukurrpa, creating features as they went. The shapes surrounding the soakwater are plama, or hills, in which Wati Kutjarra made caves where they stayed while hunting for snakes in the area. These soakwater and hills are not only features of the physical landscape but also hold ecological and spiritual significance. The sandhill crevices are rich with edible plants and bush foods, vital sources of nourishment in desert life. This painting is an assured expression of Warlpiri women's relationship to Ngurra (Country), affirming the importance of water, food, and ancestral connection in sustaining both physical and cultural survival. © BAI BAI NAPANGARDI / Copyright Agency, 2026
