Ballion a Paris, a relatively early French quarter-hour-repeating pillared mantel clock the eight-day duration movement having a silk-suspension and striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with pull-cord repeating the last hour and unusually with the strikework set on the movement backplate and numbered 2897, with a gilded cast-brass sunburst pendulum bob, the white convex enamel dial having black Roman numerals, gilded brass fleur-de-lys- hands, and signed for the maker Baillon a Paris, the white marble case having cast brass gilded capitals to the four pillars and surmounted by a gilded brass canopy, height 38cm including bracket. Notes: The Baillon family are a well recorded family of fine clockmakers originating in Rouen in the late-1600s with Jean-Batiste and Albert. By the early-to-mid 1700s the family had moved to Paris with the Jean-Baptiste-Albert situated at rue Dauphine, a superb watchmaker with various horological items in private collections and museums including the Musee du Petit Palais and the Musee des Arts Decorative a Paris all signed Baillon a Paris. His son Albert is known to have been working at rue Thevenot in circa 1783. Reference: Dictonnaire des Horlogers Francais, Tardy, Pub. 1971.
