Follower of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) Sevillian School – 18th Century Infant Jesus Savior of the World Oil on canvas. Interesting religious painting belonging to the Sevillian school of the 18th century, made by a follower of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, whose pictorial language and devotional models exerted an extraordinary influence on Andalusian painting of later generations. The work represents the Infant Jesus as Savior of the World, full-length and practically naked, partially wrapped by a deep red mantle that introduces the main chromatic accent of the composition. The Child appears on a cloud bench, with his gaze raised to the sky and a delicate luminous nimbus around the head. With his right hand he makes a blessing gesture, while with the left he rests on the globe crowned with the cross. This iconography presents Christ as conqueror and savior of the world: the globe alludes to the universality of His sovereignty and the cross anticipates the Passion and the triumph over sin and death. It is a iconography closely linked to Murillo’s universe. In Seville’s Hospital of Charity church there is precisely a Murillo Infant Jesus Savior of Murillo, dating to around 1671, in which the Christ Child holds the globe crowned by the cross while blessing with the other hand and directing his gaze upward. Museum sources emphasize how Murillo used this type of child images to express religious concepts through a spirituality that is particularly kind and accessible. This painting clearly extends that Murillian model, though with an execution typical of a later follower. The child’s body is built with soft, warm flesh tones, with delicate transitions between pinks, ochres, and shadowed areas. The face, with idealized features and contemplative expression, concentrates much of the emotional charge of the composition. The red mantle, arranged with broad folds around the legs and side, contrasts powerfully with the flesh tones and the dark background. The latter, practically devoid of narrative elements, allows the figure to emerge clearly and accentuates the devotional effect. The composition fully participates in the tradition of the so-called “Children of the Passion,” a typology especially widespread during the Spanish Baroque, in which the infancy of Christ is represented accompanied by attributes that anticipate His future Passion and redemptive function. Murillo’s influence on this genre was especially lasting. In fact, there are later Sevillian works that explicitly repeat his models of the triumphant Infant Jesus, demonstrating the extraordinary continuity of these compositions beyond the master’s life. Given its stylistic characteristics and evident dependence on Murillist prototypes, it is appropriate to catalogue it as Sevillian School of the 18th century, follower of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Condition The painting presents widespread craquelure and signs of aging visible in different areas of the painted surface, as well as wear and other alterations typical of an old work. The photographs are an integral part of the description and must be examined carefully to assess the current state of conservation. The work is currently presented framed. IMPORTANT ABOUT THE FRAME The frame shown in the photographs is supplied exclusively as a GIFT with the work.
