Basket Stars (Ophiuroidea) Taxidermy full body mount...

Exceptional Gorgonocephalus Basket Star – Top Quality Specimen – Ligurian Sea An exceptional specimen of Gorgonocephalus, collected from the Ligurian Sea at great depth and remarkable for the extraordinary development and preservation of its highly branched arms. This is a particularly impressive example, with a large central disc surrounded by an intricate network of repeatedly dividing arms. The numerous branches curl, twist and overlap into dense sculptural clusters, creating the characteristic basket-like appearance that makes Gorgonocephalus one of the most fascinating forms among brittle stars. The specimen shows excellent three-dimensional volume and an unusually rich architecture, with many of the finer terminal branches still visible. Its muted beige, grey and olive tones further emphasize the complex natural structure. Gorgonocephalus specimens are particularly difficult to preserve. When stressed or captured, these animals can perform autotomy, deliberately detaching portions of their arms as a defensive response. Some terminal sections are therefore naturally incomplete, but the specimen retains an outstanding overall structure and visual integrity. The underside clearly reveals the large central disc and the origin of the principal arms, offering an excellent view of the animal’s characteristic anatomy. Presented on a transparent display stand, included with the specimen. A top-quality natural history specimen with exceptional sculptural presence, ideal for an advanced marine collection, cabinet of curiosities or sophisticated decorative display.
