BATEMAN FAMILY. An exceptionally fine George III Wine or Water Ewer

This beautiful Ewer is of a large size and stands on a stepped circular pedestal foot decorated with an outer gadrooned band. The main body has a baluster form and is decorated on the lower half with bold lobed vertical bands. The slender neck rises to an everted rim and pouring spout. The cast, scroll, reeded handle is decorated with leaf capping and Classical floral roundels and the bottom of the handle displays a pierced anthemion motif. The top section displays an acanthus leaf moulding where it is attached to the main body. The Ewer is in excellent condition, is well marked and displays a double Crest on the front of the main body. The Crests are those of Lawson and Webster as used by Harry Lawson Webster, later 1st Viscount Burnham, of county Buckinghamshire. Peter and William I Bateman were members of the famous Bateman dynasty of silversmiths, started by Hester Bateman. Peter was Hester’s son and William was Hester’s grandson and the nephew of Peter. They entered into partnership in 1805, which continued until Peter retired in 1815. They worked from the family workshops in Bunhill Row, where Hester Bateman had been so prolific. Height, to the top of the handle: 11.75 inches, 29.38 cm. Length, handle to spout: 6.5 inches, 16.25 cm. Weight: 37oz.
