BATTLE AXE Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Admiralty Islands 19th / 20th century. Carved obsidian, puttynut (Parinarium), and wood with a beautiful patina from age and use H. 49 cm – W. 12.2 cm Provenance: - Anthony JP Meyer Collection Exhibition and publication: - Casse-têtes II - Clubs & Weapons of Oceania, Galerie Meyer, 2022, pp. 66–67 A rare battle axe, decorated at its tip with a highly stylized human head bearing, on the back, the war charm of seasoned warriors. This head likely represents a stylized ancestral figure, while the spindle-shaped handle evokes the body. See a similar example acquired in 1939 from the James Hooper Collection (no. 1076), illustrated on pl. 157, in: Phelps, Steven: *Art and Artefacts of the Pacific, Africa, and the Americas – The James Hooper Collection*. Hutchinson & Co. Ltd. & Christie’s, Manson & Woods, London, 1975. Three other examples are held at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, collected by André Vayson de Pradenne (1888–1939) No. 71.1950.30.468.1-3, 71.1950.30.469.1-2, 71.1950.30.470.1-2
