Belgian school (XX) - Scène urbaine avec autobus Brossel (Au Bon Marché)

Beautiful mixed media on cardboard, signed and dated 1988, depicting an urban scene of Brussels in 1939. In the foreground, one can recognise an old Brussels Brossel bus bearing the advertisement “AU BON MARCHÉ”. The vehicle and this advertisement correspond to historical documentation of Brussels transport of that period. The main interest of this work lies in its historic and documentary character. The artist has represented with great detail a Brussels that has disappeared today: architecture, shop windows, vehicles, plaques, commercial signs and old advertisements. Several of the shops and signs visible in the composition have since disappeared, giving this painting a true dimension of nostalgic testimony to Brussels life before the war. The work was created in 1988, i.e., nearly fifty years after the depicted scene. It thus seems to have been conceived as a historical evocation of Brussels in 1939, probably based on documents or old photographs. Unframed dimensions: H 30 cm, W 37 cm; with a handsome frame featuring motifs: H 33 cm, W 40 cm. The signature is indeed present but the identity of the artist could not be established with certainty. The work is therefore offered as an unidentified artist, probably Belgian.
