Belle Époque Pendant With Pink Sapphire, Pearl & Diamonds, Circa 1895 & Later

In the years shortly before 1890, there was a revolution in jewellery. While yellow gold and rich trimmings with colourful stones had dominated fashion until then, white, cool, sparkling jewellery was now the order of the day. Instead of many pieces that were difficult to combine, the ladies now concentrated on a few, but all the more high-quality objects. The designs were delicate and clearly restrained in their formal language. Leaves, tendrils and light geometric shapes now dominated the scene - where putti and magnificent ornaments had previously predominated. It is this new style that was to characterize the image of the Belle Époque - and which is also evident here: white in light, high-quality in decoration and perfectly crafted. This pendant was created at the beginning of this new fashion. The underside, i.e. the back and sides of the piece, are made of rose gold. However, the visible elements of the setting are made of silver or platinum, so that the pieces appear white when worn. White due to the sparkle of the approximately 2.70 ct diamonds and white due to the cool shimmer of the large pearl in the center. When the pendant from Frankfurt am Main found its way to us, it had been lying in a jewelry box for many years because it was incomplete. A loop was missing to wear it and its proportions called for a movable suspension. Our goldsmiths therefore added the loop in red gold and also added the pink sapphire in its platinum setting. It is a very beautiful, natural, untreated sapphire whose light color perfectly matches the other gemstones in the pieces. The pearl, an early cultured pearl, was most likely added at the beginning of the 20th century. This beautiful, now complete piece of jewellery can be worn immediately with a delicate platinum chain.
