Rare ancient book from the early 18th century (see photos). Dissertations on the Psalms and prefaces on each of the five sapiential books, composed in Latin by BOSSUET and translated into French by M. LE ROI. BOSSUET Jacques-Bénigne. The work entitled “Dissertations on the Psalms, and prefaces on each of the five sapiential books” is a theological and biblical-exegesis work originally composed in Latin by Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704), the famous Bishop of Meaux. Translated into French and annotated by the abbot Charles-François Le Roi, this treatise was published posthumously in Paris, notably by the Estienne Brothers in 1775. Content of the work This volume gathers the literary, historical, and spiritual analysis that Bossuet devoted to a major portion of the Old Testament. The Dissertations on the Psalms: Bossuet studies the structure of the Psalter, the authority of the texts, the role attributed to King David, and the prophetic or christological reach of the canticles. He defends the doctrinal tradition against the critiques of his time (such as those of the jurist and theologian Hugo Grotius). The Prefaces on the five sapiential books: Bossuet provides a critical and theological introduction for each of the five great books of Wisdom (the Christian tradition of the Old Regime generally grouping under this name Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, Wisdom of Solomon, and Ecclesiasticus). Type of edition structure (1775) The book consists of the following parts: - Bossuet’s Letter to his Clergy (about the reading of the Scriptures). - General Dissertation on the Psalms. - Individual prefices for each of the five books of Wisdom. - Explanatory notes and comments in the translator’s own hand, M. Le Roi. Leather bound from the period, title piece, format “17 X 10 cm,” headbands, lamp tips, decorated spine, red edges, vignette on the title page, drop caps, very beautiful rare 18th-century exemplar.
