This is an antique Japanese export silver box with repoussé reliefs of dragons and symbols, probably late 19th–early 20th century (Meiji period). Japanese, Meiji period (ca. 1890–1920), silver-plated metal with finely hammered decoration in eastern symbolism for jewelry or pills. The lid features a relief of blooming chrysanthemums (kiku), a traditional and symbolic Japanese floral motif associated with the imperial household and often appears on Meiji- and Taisho-period metalwork (ca. 1868–1926). The flowers are rendered in raised relief against a background with a basketweave pattern, a classic decorative element in Japanese metalwork from that era.
