apoleon III Antique Matchbox - Boulle Marquetry Tortoiseshell & Brass Description of the item Rare and elegant 19th-century matchbox (match holder) in the Napoleon III style. This beautiful display piece testifies to the refinement of smoking accessories of the era. It features a superb Boulle-style marquetry on its lid, composed of finely cut brass fillets inlaid on a red-tinted tortoiseshell background. • Exterior details: The center of the lid presents a medallion with an interlaced monogram. The edges are outlined by a carved bronze or gilt-brass border. • Functionality: The box opens to a blackened wood compartment. The base is equipped with its original striker (red roughened surface) for striking the matches. • Condition: Good overall state of preservation for an object of this age. Presence of an authentic patina and light signs of use that add to its charm. Small brass and wood loss (See photos for details).
