BRACCIALE Italy 19th century or earlier Walnut wood (?) with a beautiful patina from use and age H. 20 cm – W. 26 cm – D. 18.5 cm An exceptional wooden bracciale, or sleeve, for the game of Pallone col bracciale. Particularly sculptural in design, this bracciale is adorned on the front with a zoomorphic face that, thanks to the ring of spiked points resembling a hedgehog’s quills, evokes the head of a lion with large, round eyes. This example is unique in that its conical spikes are arranged in eight rows. The game of “Pallone col bracciale” was very popular in Italy as early as the 16th century, and its first published set of rules dates back to 1555. The game reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries and remained popular well into the 1930s. Players of “Pallone col bracciale” are called pallonisti. In the 19th century, Italian pallonisti were the highest-paid and most admired athletes.
