In 1948, the creation of the Hebrew state triggered the first Arab–Israeli war and the exodus of more than 700,000 Palestinians to neighboring countries. What remains today of their towns and villages emptied of their inhabitants? It is to answer this question that I went to Israel: to locate and photograph the vestiges of these ghost towns that disappeared in the swirl of the 1948 war. This reportage is a journey through time; a visual pilgrimage to the origins of the refugee issue. These images are a testimony to a key moment in the region’s history whose consequences are today at the heart of our current affairs. Bruno Fert — documentary photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanist body of work devoted to exile, to migrations and the landscapes they traverse. From vanished Palestinian villages to the precarious shelters of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work along the roads of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who strive to reach Europe. A precise and silent photography, where the landscape becomes a bearer of memory.
