Large quarto, publisher’s cardboard binding with an illustrated dust jacket. A major study in Czech devoted to the history of musical instruments from prehistory to the modern era. Extensive documentary illustrations presenting instruments across civilizations and eras: archaeological instruments, stringed, wind, and percussion instruments, European and non-European instruments, as well as numerous ancient depictions of musicians. The illustrations combine photographs of objects, reproductions of manuscripts, paintings, and engravings; several full-page color plates. Of particular note are richly decorated zoomorphic instruments, pre-Columbian instruments, and numerous documents relating to the history of European instrument making. Handwritten autograph dedication dated 1958 on the title page. Dust jacket is heavily worn, with tears, missing sections, and damage to the corners and edges; the book itself is in satisfactory condition.
