Byzantine or Fatimid Miniature Olive Green Glass Eye Jar with Bosses

Eastern Mediterranean, Byzantine or Fatimid. A miniature jar of translucent olive green glass, free-blown into a squat, rounded body that narrows to a short rim. The lower body has a band of rounded bosses, each set inside a ring. The bosses and rings were worked into the wall from the inside, so they rise in relief and give the jar its watchful "eye" pattern. Dark earth has packed deep into the recessed hollows of this decoration, outlining each motif against the paler glass, which is full of small seed bubbles. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 205291
