Cabinet - Wood - China - Bogu jia

This is a Bogu jia, i.e., a wooden carved table-top display stand traditionally used in China to exhibit works of art, porcelain, jade, or small collectible objects. It features a circular silhouette resting on a raised rectangular base with shaped feet. Inside the circle, the 11 shelves are arranged at unequal, staggered levels (a geometric design typical of traditional Chinese furnishings). It is made of hardwood painted with a glossy finish in a dark reddish-brown color (a tone reminiscent of mahogany or rosewood). It presents small carved inserts with lattice-like perforated geometric motifs beneath some of the upper and lower shelves, which serve as supporting and decorative elements. The design of the Bogu jia (博古架), literally translatable as a “shelf for expansive antiquities” or “exhibitor of the hundred treasures,” has a fascinating history rooted in the culture and aesthetics of imperial China. This piece of furniture embodies the traditional love of collecting, the cosmic order, and the symbolism of good fortune. The origin of the term and the appreciation of the objects on display reach back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 A.D.). Initially, the word bogu (博古, derived from the concept of “vast knowledge of antiquities”) referred to the cataloging and inventory of bronzes, jades, and ancient relics. Scholars and aristocrats of the time began to create real structures to display these precious collections, giving rise to the first prototypes of shelves. During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 A.D.), the Bogu jia moved from grand ceremonial halls to intimate domestic spaces, finding its perfect place in the scholars’ study and in private rooms, where it encouraged contemplation. Under the Qing Dynasty, the constructive complexity and ornamentation reached their peak. Imperial palaces housed majestic full-wall fixed partitions, while in common homes smaller versions or small table models spread, just like the one shown in the image. The Bogu jia is much more than a simple functional piece of furniture; it is a philosophical microcosm governed by precise visual concepts: 1. Balanced Asymmetry Unlike Western furniture that historically favored axial symmetry, the shelves of the Bogu jia are deliberately arranged on staggered, asymmetrical levels. This arrangement reflects the Taoist concept of constant change and the natural flow of energy (Qi). The variety of heights also allows each exhibited object (a vase, a scholar’s stone, a figurine) to enjoy its own air space, celebrating its uniqueness without one piece overshadowing another. 2. The Circle and the Square The circular structure of the display unit set atop a square base recalls the ancient Chinese cosmology embedded in the philosophy of Tian Yuan Di Fang: “Heaven is round, Earth is square.” The union of the two shapes symbolizes harmony between the universe and human beings, bringing stability and balance to the room. 3. A symbolic rebus of auspiciousness In Chinese decorative tradition, the furniture itself or the arrangement of the objects inside often formed a visual rebus. The empty spaces and the straight lines of the pierced woods imitate classical motifs (such as the Greek key or the lattice), designed to bless longevity, ongoing wealth, and sagacious knowledge for those who own the piece. In short, owning a Bogu jia was a tangible sign of high erudition, cultural refinement, and social status, turning the act of displaying small objects into an act of art and spiritual contemplation. The measurements are H 75.7 x L 60.7 x SP 14 cm Its weight is about 5500 g
