Caddo Engraved Blackware Jar - Dense Hatched and Fluted Panels

Caddo Engraved Blackware Jar - Dense Hatched and Fluted Panels

Native American, Caddo. A globular jar of burnished dark earthenware, its entire exterior worked into a restless field of engraved ornament. Fine parallel hatching runs in opposing diagonals, banded by horizontal registers around the flaring neck and broken into triangular and lenticular panels across the swollen shoulder, so that light catches each ruled cluster differently as the vessel turns. Shallow flutes soften the lower body toward a rounded base. The clay, tempered with crushed shell or grog and fired in a reducing atmosphere, has taken a smoky gray-brown skin typical of Caddo workshops in the Red River drainage. Vessels of this scale served both the household and the grave, holding food or drink for the living and, in mortuary contexts, accompanying the dead as provision for a journey. Caddo potters of the Trans-Mississippi South (present-day east Texas, northwest Louisiana, southwest Arkansas, and southeast Oklahoma) engraved their wares after firing, cutting into a hardened burnished surface with a bone or flint stylus rather than incising damp clay. The technique demanded confidence: a slip of the hand could not be smoothed away. The resulting hatched and cross-hatched zones, often filled with white pigment now largely lost, belong to a design grammar that archaeologists have used to sort types such as Hickory Engraved, Ripley Engraved, and Taylor Engraved, and to trace the movement of ideas between Caddo communities across several centuries. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 202279
