Campo del Cielo meteorite Iron-Nickel with Widmanstätten...

Iron-Nickel with Widmanstätten Structure — The Campo del Cielo meteorite is a ferriferous meteorite (IAB-MG class) discovered in Argentina, in the Chaco province, in an area known for meteorite falls estimated between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. The region takes its name from "Campo del Cielo" ("field of heaven" in Spanish) because of local legends that spoke of "pieces of sky fallen to Earth". Iron (Fe): ~92% Nickel (Ni): ~6-7% Traces of cobalt (Co), phosphorus (P), gallium (Ga), germanium (Ge) and iridium (Ir) Kamacite (iron-nickel alloy with low nickel content) Taenite (iron-nickel alloy with high nickel content) Troilite (iron sulfide) Graphite and schreibersite (iron-nickel phosphide, rare) The meteorite presents a rough and irregular texture, typical of the fusion crust formed during the descent through Earth's atmosphere. Some polished sections can reveal the classic Widmanstätten structure, characteristic of iron meteorites, which appears as bands of iron-nickel alloy crystallized slowly in space over millions of years. Cosmic age: ~4.5 billion years (formation) Fall date: About 4,000-5,000 years ago Isotopic analysis of the meteorite has provided information about the formation of the solar system. This Campo del Cielo specimen represents a fragment of the universe, a testament to the birth of the solar system and the history of ferrous meteorites that traveled for millions of years before falling to Earth. Its rugged, metallic appearance, together with the internal Widmanstätten structure, makes it a fascinating piece for collectors and enthusiasts of mineralogy and astrophysics.
