The sculpture testifies to pure craftsmanship; the serene facial features of Mary and the expression of the Christ Child are carved with great refinement and detail. Also the dynamic, flowing drapery of the cloak gives the piece a lot of depth and texture. The rear side is intentionally kept flat and shows the authentic, broad gouge and chisel marks of the woodcarver, confirming the handmade character of this unique piece. At the back there is also a metal pin used to hang the piece simply and neatly on the wall.
