Through the Circle – Revelation Maurizio Castagna With Through the Circle – Revelation, Maurizio Castagna confronts one of the most intense and significant moments of his artistic quest: the instant when what was hidden, intuitively perceived but not yet understood, suddenly emerges into consciousness and manifestaes itself in all its evidence. At the center of the composition a large circular vortex develops, dominating the surface of the canvas. It is not a static geometric shape, but a structure in constant motion, an energy field that seems to attract and at the same time liberate matter, memory, and light. The gaze is inevitably drawn toward the central nucleus, where the luminous white asserts itself as a revealing presence, as a point of truth that emerges from the apparent chaos of the painterly stratifications. The tones of blue, aquatic green, and white build an suspended, almost cosmic atmosphere. Unlike the works of the series dominated by red or ochre, here color assumes a contemplative function. The material does not explode, but opens up. It does not shout, but reveals. The cool hues evoke depth, silence, and knowledge, transforming the painterly surface into a mental space where intuition and awareness meet. The complex network of black signs crossing the circle suggests the path necessary to reach this revelation. Each line, every overlay, every tactile trace seems to tell a search, a crossing, a process of inner transformation. As is often the case in Castagna’s work, the gesture does not describe an external reality, but makes visible a movement of the soul. Formed at the Albertina Academy of Turin and present in public and private international collections, Castagna has for decades developed a painting rooted in stratification, the automatism of gesture, and the material’s capacity to preserve memory. In this work these elements achieve a particular harmony: every mark appears necessary, every intervention contributes to building an image that gradually reveals itself to the observer.
