Biography. Livorno 1830 – 1903 Cesare Bartolena was born on May 27, 1830. Passionate about painting since childhood, he followed the teachings of maestro Enrico Pollastrini at the Florence Academy. Telemaco Signorini indicates him as a regular at their “Caffè” even if his art was little influenced by the Tuscan artists. He formed a friendship with Giovanni Fattori to whose school he sent his nephew Giovanni, without being particularly influenced by it. In 1848 he participated as a volunteer in the First War of Independence. One of his oldest works is The mother of the conscript. He participated in many local and national exhibitions of the time, including the Ricasoli Competition, where he won the second prize and the Parma Exhibition of 1870. At the latter he presented the pastel Le ore d’ozio and the oil Il ritorno al reggimento. He became famous with the painting The departure of the Livornese volunteers for the war in Sicily, donated to the Municipality of Livorno on July 25, 1872. The work, presented at the Second Milan National Exhibition, assumed a notable historical significance. Cesare and his brother Adolfo also turned to photography, taking over in 1872 the Livorno studio of A. Bernaud. Since January 10, 1877 he was part of the Commission, chaired by Aristide Nardini Despotti Mospignotti and also composed of Eugenio Cecconi (as secretary), Natale Betti, Temistocle Guerrazzi, Franco Marubini and Giovanni Puntoni. This Commission was tasked with examining art objects donated to the Municipality for the public Pinacoteca. In 1884 he participated in the Società d’incoraggiamento of Florence with Campo militare and Avanguardia. Two years later he presented himself at the Milan Exposition of Fine Arts with La morte del generale Cosimo Del Fante. In 1900 he took part in the Alinari Competition with La Madonna dei fiori. He executed a portrait in the uniform of a Bersagliere of his nephew. Until 1902 he was part of the Provincial Commission for the Preservation of Monuments. He died on May 14, 1903 poor and sick.
