Chandelier - Glass, Chrome

A chandelier that immediately reveals its origins in the sixties. This Italian Sputnik lamp combines a geometric metal core with a large amount of transparent Murano glass elements. The design references the fascination with spaceflight and technology that during this period clearly influenced architecture, furniture, and lighting. From a central metal sphere, the glass elements spread around the lamp, creating the characteristic radial form of a Sputnik chandelier. Each transparent glass element is hand-blown and individually attached to the metal construction. The elongated drop shapes soften the technical character of the frame and give the lamp a more organic appearance. Eight light sources sit between the Murano glass. When the lamp is lit, light is refracted and scattered by the many transparent surfaces. This creates reflections between the individual glass elements and the chandelier’s appearance changes throughout the day. Even when the lamp is not lit, the construction remains clearly legible. With a diameter and height of approximately 72 centimeters, the chandelier has enough volume to hang freely in a space without looking heavy. Its symmetrical form comes into its own above a round or rectangular dining table. It can also serve as a central lighting object in an entry hall, stairwell, or larger seating area. Glass, wood, natural stone, and metal blend easily with the transparent Murano glass. The Sputnik form gained popularity especially from the late fifties, in a period when international interest in spaceflight found its way into interior design. Italian designers and glassmakers translated such new shapes into lighting, combining traditional glassmaking techniques with pronounced geometric constructions. In this piece, the designer or manufacturer has not yet been identified, so a specific attribution cannot be given with certainty. This Italian chandelier brings together two recognizable aspects of sixties design: the spatial Sputnik shape and the craft of Murano glass. The transparent droplets give the metal construction a lighter character and, from the eight light points, create a layered distribution of light. Condition The chandelier is in good vintage condition, with signs of use appropriate to age and use. On the central metal sphere and around several lampholders there are small traces; all Murano glass elements are intact and secured in their holders with screws.
