Charles Baudelaire - Première édition collective en...

Very beautiful set of six volumes from the first collective posthumous edition of the works of Charles Baudelaire, published from 1868, shortly after the poet’s death in 1867. This important edition, partly original, is a bibliophilic reference of the 19th century. It brings together several major works of the poet, some texts published here for the first time in a volume. Composition of the set: * Volume I – The Flowers of Evil (1868) – 406 pages. Third edition, posthumous and expanded, preceded by a notice by Théophile Gautier and accompanied by a portrait engraved of Baudelaire. * Volume II – Aesthetic Curiosities (1868) – 436 pages. First collective edition of his principal writings on art criticism. * Volume III – The Romantic Art (1868) – 440 pages. First collective edition, partly original, of his literary studies. * Volume IV – Small Prose Poems – Artificial Paradises (1869) – 468 pages. First edition in volume of Small Prose Poems. * Volume V – Extraordinary Tales (1869) – 523 pages. Baudelaire’s translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales. * Volume VI – New Extraordinary Tales (1869) – 542 pages. Baudelaire’s translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales. Total pagination: 2,815 numbered pages, excluding preliminary pages. Bindings: Magnificent set in uniform half-green leather bindings, green and black marbled paper boards, spines with raised bands adorned with fleuron ornaments and gilded edges, titles and volumes gilded. The six volumes show remarkable uniformity, offering a very handsome library set. Condition: Very good overall. The bindings are particularly well preserved, with handsome gilding and marbled boards in very good condition. The interiors are also in very good condition, clean and well preserved, with only a few scattered light foxing and discreet signs of time. Bibliophilic interest: This first collective posthumous edition, partly original, holds an important place in the editorial history of Charles Baudelaire. It notably includes the third edition of The Flowers of Evil, the first-volume edition of Small Prose Poems, as well as his famous texts of artistic and literary criticism. The translations of Edgar Allan Poe also testify to Baudelaire’s essential role in disseminating the American writer in France. Important: this set includes volumes I to VI of the original seven-volume collective edition. Volume VII is absent.
