Chest of drawers - Walnut - Louis XV style

Weekly walnut cabinet in the Louis XV style, late 19th century Tall, narrow seven-drawer dresser with a slightly bulging front and a shaped top with a molded edge. The piece presents an elegant, well-proportioned line typical of Louis XV–style dressers produced in the second half of the nineteenth century. Its slender form and cabriole legs make it particularly suitable for bedrooms, entryways, or service spaces where you want a decorative piece without taking up too much room. The visible surfaces are inlaid with walnut of good quality, with a very pronounced, wavy, decorative grain. The drawers are delineated by dark inlays that enhance their curved silhouette. This finish, combined with the surface’s gloss, gives the piece a rich, refined appearance characteristic of good-quality nineteenth-century cabinetmaking. The structure and the drawers are made of solid wood. Internally, traditional joints and wooden reinforcements are clearly evident, typical of carpentry of the era. The bottoms and sides of the drawers show natural marks of time and use, without recent invasive interventions. This internal construction confirms the piece’s solidity and its coherence with production from the second half of the nineteenth century. The legs are cabriole, joined by a shaped apron, and terminate with metal sabot feet. The drawer pulls are metal, simply made and coherent with the style of the furniture. The overall curves and proportions clearly recall the Louis XV/Rococo revival taste, widely diffused in Italy and France during the nineteenth century. Condition: The state of preservation is good and consistent with the piece’s age. The structure is stable and the drawers slide correctly. The external finish is glossy and uniform, with the walnut grain clearly visible. Normal signs of wear, small scratches, and wood shrinkage typical of late nineteenth-century pieces are present. There are no major structural damages beyond those described below and documented in the photos. The most significant wear marks, visible in the photos, are on the front right foot and on the back left foot. At the back there are more evident flaws: a couple of scratches and some damage, highlighted in detail in the last three photos. Apart from the mark on the front right foot, all other signs of wear are not visible once the piece is placed against a wall. Strengths: - Walnut grain particularly beautiful and decorative on the visible surfaces. - Elegant, well-proportioned Louis XV style. - Solid internal construction, with visible mortise-and-tenon joints and reinforce blocks. - There are four well-lit interior photos showing the piece’s full integrity. - Overall excellent condition and good drawer functionality. Compact format with strong aesthetic impact. Details on Era and Country of Origin: The piece is consistent with Louis XV/Rococo revival styles from the second half of the nineteenth century, most likely between 1860 and 1890 (approximately). During this period most seven-drawer tall and narrow dressers with cabriole legs, walnut veneering, and metal sabots were produced in both Italy and France. Arguments supporting a possible Italian origin: The tall and narrow seven-drawer dresser was particularly common in Italian production of the period. Solid-wood construction with reinforcement blocks and walnut veneering are typical of Italian cabinetmaking of the era. Arguments supporting a possible French origin: The bulging lines, cabriole legs, and metal sabots directly reference French Louis XV–style models, widely imitated abroad. Further details about the material: Front and top surface: very beautiful, wavy, and pronounced grain. This is typical of veneer walnut (or a highly figured walnut used in veneer). The presence of dark inlays and regular grain on the drawers suggest veneer work. Interior of drawers, bottoms and structure: solid wood, with joints and reinforcement blocks. Here the solid wood is clearly visible, though not of the same quality/figuring as the front. Back and sides: wood is more uniform and less figured, consistent with a solid-wood construction of a secondary or lower-quality walnut essence. In summary: a piece of good nineteenth-century cabinetmaking with a solid-wood core and visible walnut-veneered surfaces (or similar timber) with beautiful grain. It is not a piece entirely in solid walnut. Elements such as the quality of the grain, internal solid-wood construction with blocks, and the absence of early 19th- or 20th-century details support this dating but do not allow narrowing to a single decade (e.g., 1870s or 1880s) without marks, labels, or documentary elements. The few flaws and signs of wear are documented in detail in the specific photos, mainly on the front right foot and back left foot. As shown in the last two photos, there are two defects on the back of the piece.
