This underscores the forgiveness of sins and the hope of eternal life. Context of the meal: Jesus celebrates the Jewish Passover with his disciples, a meal commemorating the liberation of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. During this meal, he gives new meaning to the traditional symbols of bread and wine. Institution of the Eucharist: Jesus takes bread, breaks it and gives it saying: “Take, eat, this is my body.” Then he takes the cup of wine and says: “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” These words establish the Christian rite of the Eucharist (or the Lord’s Supper in Protestant traditions), which is celebrated during Mass in memory of Christ's sacrifice. Announcement of the betrayal: During the meal, Jesus announces that one of the disciples will betray him, referring to Judas Iscariot, who will shortly leave the table to hand Jesus over to the authorities.
