The principal side is finely painted with an auspicious scene symbolizing good fortune and longevity: two spotted deer (lu) beneath an ancient pine tree (song), on whose trunk a Manchurian crane (xianhe) is perched, surrounded by lingzhi fungus and blooming peonies.
