Chinese Cloisonné Opium Pipe + Japanese Brass Yatate

Chinese Cloisonné Opium Pipe + Japanese Brass Yatate

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty; Japan, Meiji period, ca. late 19th century CE. Chinese nickel silver and cloisonne opium water pipe is paired here with a Japanese Meiji period brass yatate, a traditional portable brush holder and inkwell, together representing two distinct but parallel rituals of leisure and literacy in East Asian daily life. The Qing dynasty opium water pipe is constructed of nickel silver with cloisonne enamel decoration, its compact body encircled by floral reserves in muted blues, whites, and green tones set against a dark ground. The pipe features a gracefully curved stem with a secondary inlet, a hinged brass bowl cover, and a removable mouthpiece, all elements designed for controlled, repeated use. Such pipes were common among Qing literati and urban elites, functioning as social instruments as much as personal ones, used during extended gatherings where conversation, contemplation, and ceremony unfolded slowly. Size of larger (opium pipe): 1.3" L x 3.5" W x 9.9" H (3.3 cm x 8.9 cm x 25.1 cm) The accompanying yatate is a brass example from the Meiji period, consisting of a cylindrical brush tube paired with a hinged ink reservoir. Carried by scholars, officials, and travelers, the yatate allowed for writing, note-taking, or poetry at any moment, reflecting the high cultural value placed on literacy and calligraphy in Japan. Its design is compact and efficient, prioritizing portability without sacrificing durability. The brass surface shows a warm, even patina from handling over time. Presented together, these objects offer a concise study in the material culture of pause and attention. One facilitated inhalation and reflection, the other inscription and thought. Both are utilitarian by design, yet carefully crafted, revealing how refinement, habit, and personal ritual were embedded in the smallest objects of late Qing China and Meiji Japan. Item # 200213
